Inspired by my visit here in Charleston South Carolina. Hundreds of these cute little guys are hanging from the palmetto trees. One of them looked at me and bobbed his head-- reminds me of my pet Anole Paco.
They are the little dragons of the Palmetto Tree. Referenced from the real deal. There was one sitting outside my window It was so damn cute I had to draw it.
I also wanted to experiment with some more vibrant colors instead of my favorite neutral earthy tones
My vacation here is going great! I'll have to upload pictures later. For now I hope everyone had a great 4th of July for those who celebrate Thanks for everything guys!
One of the first things that strikes me when I see this image, is the use of the colors. In this image warm and cool colors are used to create a striking contrast between sky and sea.
Additionally, the colors are used to create the textures on the bark of the tree, the rippling surface of the ocean and of course on the skin of the Palmetto Dragon itself.
The textures themselves are also worth mentioning. It's nice to see how they all differ significantly from each other. The water looks smooth, while the bark looks rough, almost stylised. And the lizard's skin looks so detailed, that it's almost realistic. The heavy line work, which suggests a more toony style, contrasts with this realism. This is a combination (heavy line work + detailed textures) you rarely see, and seeing it being pulled of successfully is even more unusual.
The only issues I have with this picture, is the fact that the grey, transparent leaf-like patterns on the background don't really seem to suit the image. They seem alien, next to the detailed textures mentioned earlier. I think it might have looked better without these 'leaves'. Personally I don't think the empty space they would leave behind, would be a terribly big problem, but that could always be remedied by drawing some stars in the night sky, or something like that.
I love the "sunset" colours. Composition is very good. The background would probably look better without leaf shadows (or with full colour leafs maybe) but that's just a little suggestion. Overall it's great
Dang, I wish I could critique but I really can't... This is amazing and if I could have it I would hang it on my wall. The blue and other colors contrast nicely, and the composition is well-balanced with subject/background as well as with color and level of detail. ^^ Probably the only thing that bugs me a little after staring at it is the translucent thing in the background--the overlap could have been a little more balanced, and the lines a little smoother. But it doesn't subtract from the amazingness of this image. ^^

But overall this is still a very nice image.
