For those of you who don't know my story, I grew up in the suburbs of south Baltimore- Riviera Beach Maryland. I spent the first 10 years of my life there...and now being up in Pennsylvania, there are things about Riviera Beach that I miss dearly.
One of which was my first true friend, Alex Jenkins.
Alex and I lived on the same street, and we grew up together. Ever since the day I was allowed to play outside by myself, I played with him. We'd play cops and robbers on our bikes, Matchbox cars in his sandbox, and climb the trees in my big backyard. The 2 other Girls on my street that I used to play with were sometimes mean to me, and Alex would always stick up for me.
One time, we were playing Court- and I was the criminal. The girls handcuffed me to the fence as "jail". Then I had to pee really bad and I yelled to let me go. No one came to help......but then Alex did. He let me go as long as I promised to come right back
It was 7 years since I seen Alex last. We were both 10 years old when I moved. But over the Thankgiving Holiday, my family and I traveled to my Great Uncle's house (where my mom and I used to live)... and I got the chance to knock on Alex's door--- He opened it. He was shit-shocked to see me! We gave each other a big hug and sat down by our favorite tree to catch up! It was so amazing to be able to see him again! He's the only other person that knows me better than I do myself.
In light of our reunion, I was inspired to do this- It's how I remember Alex as a younger boy-- the boy I used to play with- probably the one person who has had the biggest impact on who I am today.
Too bad our parents never got along that well....and he lives 3 hours away from me now. But we will always keep each other in our hearts no matter what life brings us.
About The Artwork I did this entirely in Ink (the Alex part) I've messed around with the proportions for a reason too. The background is a photo taken by ~Tails000 Of the Francis Scott Key Bridge over the Potapsco River with Balitmore on the horizon-- A scene I would often see on our boating adventures around Riviera Beach.
Sweet background info, I was thinking Alex Rider, British spy and all around cool guy, lol. But--a best friend is just as awesome! I liked it, simple but detailed at the same time.
mmm... I'm having such a hard time to decide which one is better, if the picture or the story.... I'm really moved. And I gotta say, considering myself as a friend of yours, that there's NO-THING NOTHING that can break a real strong unique valuable friendship. I LOVE your story, and your drawing makes me feel like I was testifying the whole thing! Awww
Love your art to bits!
Y un genial trabajo, la puesta del fondo quedo perfecta.
Saludos!
