A Hungry Morning by Katmomma A Hungry Morning by Katmomma
Illustration for Part 2 of The Tortoise and the Hare --> [link]

After several boisterous growls from his stomach, and nothing in the icebox in the house, Jack has but one option to satisfying his hunger: the Garden.

For those of you interested in seeing the underpainting, here it is--> [link]

The Hare home architecture is inspired by Pennsylvania Dutch-Victorian (South Eastern Part of the state).

Thanks so much for Looking

Great drawing.

www.slate.com/blogs/the_eye/20…

This was my favorite book as a kid. My daughter now loves it too. My dad is a draftsmen and I grew up around house plans and construction. I want to redo this book, someday, maybe with other characters. Your drawing made me think about it for the rest of the afternoon.

Thanks,

Chris

It reminds me of Hobbiton :)
(In case you don't know what that is, it's a land from JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings trilogy)

However, it seems that I find myself looking more at his home than him himself.

Great atmosphere and warm colors. As always, it has a wonderful sort of warm-nostalgic look that is very unique. I love how his door is roundish, like a hobbit's door! I think the house style blends together really well with the rabbit hole very naturally. I also like the loose, swirly look in the trees.

I really like the image, but feel that is a distraction coming from somewhere. I think that the image feels a bit off balance pushing a bit of the focus away from the bunny in the middle.

One would be the brightness and the detail on the edges. With the rabbit being the darkest part of the image, I feel that the point of focus is being pushed a bit to the left away from him. I am still unsure if that is the issue that I see, but I suppose loss of detail and lightness (vignetting perhaps?) around the edges might help focus the image a bit more?

Other than that, the character personality is very cute and interesting. I like the quaint details used in the house design giving the feel that it had some cultural attachment to it (architectural style, etc).

I hope you don't mind me being honest. I do like the image though. :)

When a composition is symmetrically centered, it's not as interesting as an off balance piece ;) And with flush illustrations like these, they don't always have to immediately bring you to a point of emphasis. What I've done here is a movement- and the first thing my eyes go to is the house- which really is the point of the piece, to illustrate Jack's home environment from the outside. The focal point is not meant to be Jack alone-- there are several points of interest in the piece. :)

Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback

Ahhh that is an interesting way to create an image. I wasn't saying that the rabbit should be in the centre, just that I felt that my eyes were being pulled away from the rabbit (and the house as well) as it felt a bit out of focus (hence mentioning vignetting as a way to soften the image around the edges. I suppose vignetting only works with the object in the centre and may look out of place if it was to the left or right since I have not really tried it before.

Do you plan to have it on a book? If so, I suppose I can see it working where you turn the page and you see the house and then the hare as the image comes into view.

THIS IS AMAZING MARILYN. ;_;

I love how dreamlike the colours are, reminds me of autumn mornings. And the texture in the trees and such is lovely. So soft and beautiful.

The shading on Jack is great too; the fur looks fantastic.

well it was intended to be an autumn morning as the story takes place in the fall :giggle: so that is a good thing!
That glow is a direct result of the amazing capabilities the "overlay" layer in photoshop has to offer :) It really makes lighting all the more simpler and direct. And it aids with the ambiance of the atmosphere.

Thank you so much!
